Supporting Neurodiversity and Inclusion through Universal Design for Learning
This course is a must for all educators when we recognise that, “one in five children and young people need some kind of extra support for their learning. This might be because of disability, learning difficulties, disadvantage, physical or mental health or behaviour issues” (OECD Students with Disabilities, Learning Difficulties and Disadvantages: Policies, Statistics and Indicators – 2007 Edition).
Recent reports from the Office of Disabilities Issues (2022) also signal we’re not doing enough to support learners’ with disabilities, with one in four students discouraged from enrolling in ECE and 1 in 5 discouraged from enrolling in schools. This says many educators lack the confidence, capabilities and skills to support these learners.
Join us on this introductory exploration of neurodiversity and inclusion to help all students feel a sense of belonging and the confidence to succeed in education.
Course Outcomes
By completing this course, you will:
- Develop an understanding of specific learning disabilities (SLD)
- Be introduced to the UDL Framework and Principles to better support all learners
- Begin to develop a kete of resources and strategies to identify learner needs and barriers to learning, implement relevant pedagogical practices to support students’ engagement and progress in learning
- Engage with the Ministry of Education’s collaborative Learning Support Delivery Model
